Other Ways to Help

Donate Perishable Food

Food is prepared daily in most households, with leftovers that won’t get eaten or you’re leaving for a weekend and it will spoil before your return. These are great opportunities to drop the food off in a clear plastic bag for someone in need. Follow the Food Safety Guidelines here on handling and labeling food. All perishable food can be placed in a clear, sealed plastic bag like Ziploc. This includes home made soup!

Donate Non-perishable Food

These are highly needed non-perishable food items that can help supplement a food item when the fridge is empty:*

  • Tuna in foil pouches or cans
  • Vienna sausage
  • Canned chicken
  • Canned beef
  • Meals in a can like stew, spaghetti, ravioli, etc
  • Cereal
  • Shelf stable white milk (dollar store)
  • Bottled water
  • Pasta and sauce**
  • Macaroni & Cheese (box or individual cups)
  • Canned Soup
  • Individual fruit cups

Meal Kits

You never heard of a meal kit. Well, this can be a community service project within your organization. The goal is to prepare a bag of non-perishable food and a recipe on how to prepare the ingredients into a meal for 4-6 people. The cost of these run around $3-$8 for all the ingredients. Ask us for a recipe or come up with your own using non-perishable protein items in the meal. Recipes will be posted in the future.

Birthday Bags

Want to make a child happy on their birthday? We are looking for things you may just have around your house leftover from a family member’s birthday. Or you can make your own birthday bag of your own to include the following:

  • Cake mix
  • Frosting
  • Candles
  • Disposable cake pan (aluminum pan)
  • Birthday card (no signature for parent to sign)

Can include or just donate if leftover from a party:

  • Party favors
  • Balloons
  • Bubbles
  • full or partial roll of crepe paper
  • Napkins
  • Plastic silverware
  • Birthday banners

Supplies Needed

Supplies are needed to support ongoing food rescue operations, cleaning, and items needed by the patrons of the community fridges. These items include things like:

  • Inexpensive small hand held can openers without a sharp blade
  • Plastic utensils (could be packaged utensils provided from take out restaurants)

*Prefer items that don’t require a can opener when possible

** Avoid glass containers
